Get Out the Map
Program Summary
Get Out the Map: Pathways to Global Citizenship will use geographic and infographic maps as a framework to visualize and interpret personal and cultural experiences, leading students towards an expanded understanding of what it means to participate in global citizenship.
Throughout the semester, students will use visual and written languages to examine the same concepts and questions. The courses we intend to combine for this FYE arise from programs that are inherently multi-disciplinary: both Global Studies and Studio Art look at areas like geography, politics, sociology, cultural anthropology, and history from different angles in order to understand the world.
GLBS 200: Global Citizenship (3 SH, GESS)
In GLBS 200: Global Citizenship, you will develop global perspectives and competencies important for successful navigation of the world and will be prepared to move forward as a global citizen.
ARTS 150: Drawing I (3 SH, GEA)
In ARTS 150: Drawing I you will investigate different ways of mark-making with charcoal, chalk, graphite, and ink as you begin to develop your own intentional artistic sensibility. Using the work of contemporary artists from different parts of the world as references, we will expand our notions of what a map can be, opening up space for a more in-depth engagement with the world.
GEN 101 GM: ILC Get out the Map (3SH)
In GEN 101, the Integrated Learning Course (ILC), we will work on building the skills you will need to succeed in our courses and in college. The ILC is also a space in which we will work to make connections across our classes.
